WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A DOG PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

Everything that happens from the first conversation to artwork on your wall, in the order it happens.
A woman in a sage green shirt kneels in the sand holding her red and white dog, who grins at the camera as the sky turns pink over the ocean.
You booked the session. Maybe you are already picturing the piece on your wall. Maybe you are just relieved you finally did the thing you kept meaning to do.

Either way, here is exactly what happens between now and that artwork landing in your hands.

What Happens During the Pre-Session Consultation?

Before your session, we will talk it through, by phone, video, or in person at the studio if you would rather. We will cover location options, your dog's personality and comfort level, and how you are picturing the images once they are finished.

Nothing needs to be decided at this stage. This conversation is really just about getting a feel for you and your dog, so the day itself feels easy instead of unfamiliar.

How Long Does a Dog Photography Session Take?

Sessions are dog led, not clock led. Some dogs are ready to go the second they hop out of the car. Others need real time to sniff around and settle into a new place before the first frame ever gets taken, and that settling in is just as much a part of the session as anything else.

Because of that, I do not put a hard time limit on a session. What I do ask is that you plan for about 60 to 90 minutes on your calendar. Some dogs move faster, some take longer. I never want you watching the clock because something else got scheduled too close behind it, and I definitely do not want your dog to feel rushed through their own warm up.

Treats, patience, and as many resets as it takes. The leash comes out in editing.

Small aside, just for fun: my camera can shoot up to 1/32000th of a second. Whatever your wiggliest, zippiest dog throws at me, I can catch it clearly. Bring the energy.

Where Do Dog Photography Sessions Take Place?

Most sessions happen on location around Carteret County. The beach, the marsh, a quiet wooded trail, wherever fits your dog's personality and the artwork you are picturing for your home. I also have a studio in Newport for a cleaner, more contemporary look against a simple background with dramatic lighting.

We will land on the right fit together during your consultation, based on where your dog feels most comfortable and the kind of piece you want to end up with.

Sunrise is my personal favorite. Cooler temperatures, calmer water, and fewer people pulling focus.

What Time of Day Is Best for a Dog Photography Session?

Sunrise is my personal favorite. Temperatures are cooler, which matters more than people expect once a dog starts moving, and at the beach the wind and water are usually calmer too, with fewer people and distractions pulling focus.

That said, golden hour in the evening is beautiful in its own right, and some locations genuinely suit an evening session better. We will talk through timing together as part of planning your day.

What Happens at the Ordering Appointment?

About one to two weeks after your session, we will meet again, either at the studio in Newport or virtually if that works better for your schedule. The virtual option is especially popular with clients who traveled here for their session or are visiting the coast.

This is the moment you will see your images for the first time. We will go through them together and talk through how you want to enjoy them in your home.

How Long Does It Take to Receive Your Artwork?

Most pieces are ready in four to six weeks. Our signature wall art canvases take a bit longer, typically twelve to fourteen weeks, because of the level of craftsmanship that goes into each one.

It is a longer wait than a same day print shop. Every time, it is worth it.

How Is Your Artwork Delivered?

If you are local, we will schedule a delivery date once everything is ready. If you are further away, whether you traveled here for your session or live outside the area, everything ships directly to you.

The Short Version

Reach out, we talk it through, your dog leads the session at their own pace, and a few weeks later you are holding artwork that actually means something. No performance required, from either of you.

If you are getting ready for an upcoming session, the companion guides on what to wear, how to prepare your dog, and the questions people ask most are all here to help you feel ready before the day arrives.
